Under Construction!

Boo! I’m baaacckkkk! that break didn’t last long did it?  because I am fundamentally a technological Twit I am going to turn this blog into my website, so this page will just have some details about me and what I do and I’ll be adding a page called Whats Going On! and that will have updates about what I’m working on, things that have caught my attention, things that I can’t live without, you know the drill. This page will be updated as and when, no fixed schedule so pop back often!

So, let me pop off and get busy and I’ll see you soon!

You Gotta Respect The Process!

Morning my little cupcakes, you find me in a sunnier mood and ready to share with you the process of designing one of my felt doodads and at the end of the post a giveaway! And a sneak peek!  Yay!

Let’s start with what’s on telly, yes I have to work in the living room and I have to have the telly on to keep my mind from flying away! So for the last few weeks, this has been absorbing my spare brain capacity……

Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright are phenomenal as a President and First Lady hell bent on furthering their own careers.

So we start with lots of drawing that eventually turns into a design…….

I decided to start with the Chinese New Year character, 2017 being the year of the rooster.

The design then gets reduced to simplified lines and stuck to card………

The tiger balm is omnipresent at WDS HQ as a nice alternative to more painkillers! Then i cut the pieces and because they are teeny tiny I bung them in a sandwich bag……………

I draw round the pattern pieces using a Pilot Frixxion pen that erases with a blast from your hairdryer…….

Except this is where life in blog land went wrong and I used a biro!

Sewing and embroidering commences, for this little girl I wanted a face that was a bit like a Blythe doll……….

Many apologies for the light quality here, it has been a super grey week in normally sunny Sussex!

Finally, when all is done we have this………….

This little girl is made in the traditional good luck colours of red, gold and pink and could be yours if you pop over to our Facebook and like this picture on our page ! All the lovely likers will be entered into a draw for this lucky rooster to pop on your keyring or hang where you need it most!

Finally, there will be new products coming to While Darcey Sleeps, here is a little teaser picture of some phenomenal supplies courtesy of http://www.sewsweet.co.uk………..

Oooooooh who’s excited?

Have a a super week

Stop Standing In Your Way!

Morning lovelies! Are you all puzzling that headline? I’m sure like me you see more than your fair share of motivational quotes during your day. This week I saw one that literally stopped me in my tracks……….

stop-standing-in-your-own-way_daily-inspiration_-red-fairy-project

After two years of writing this blog and launching my little business, I knew right then and there that I was standing in my way! Let me tell you what I am doing that is STOPPING me being more successful.

1. I am absolutely useless at promoting my business! I belong to loads of Facebook groups that allow businesses to advertise and I do it maybe 4 times a year, it feels a little like this to me……

o-woman-bragging-facebook

But would I feel the same if I was a plumber or a dog walker? No, so it’s time to stop thinking of my business as different and start advertising regularly.

And while we are on the subject of look at me…

2. Networking! I am awful at this! I don’t read other people’s blogs as much as I should and that’s a shame as there are fabulous writers out there that I should be building relationships with, and I belong to several groups specifically set up to make networking easier, so if I follow your blog expect a visit soon……

3. Social media! After spending literally hours studying effective blog and brand promotion on a course run by the super talented April Bowles Olin of Blacksburg Belle, I am a sporadic user at best. I need to pin more and analyse the successful ones like this one……..

I also need to look at that persons boards to see what else they like, and use this information to inspire designs.

I need to Instagram more of my life and it’s ups and downs so that you get to know me better…..

4. Use time more effectively! That hour in the morning where I sit around waiting to deliver the husband to the station could be used to do some of the above!

5. Get it done! move some of the ideas I have had this year into actual action, remember this?………

It’s time to take that pretty piece of design and make it a reality.

6. Practice what I preach! Remember this from last year……

It’s time to take that great advice and not put limitations on myself or my business!

So it’s onward and upward and time to spruce up the unicorn and see how much further she can fly ( if you are new here check back on my first ever post for an explanation) .

Have a cracking week

Ghost Of Outfits Past?

Hello my gorgeous people! today I have a tale of woe to tell you that has a hopeful ending! Our story starts this last Christmas with our heroine trying to buy an outfit that she could see in her head… it was a simple black top with a perfect pale pink satin skirt. The skirt had to be full but with no gathers over the hips, and with a nice deep, firm waistband, that would hold you in a tiny bit, also the skirt had to be the most perfect shade of pink…

image

It wasn’t quite ballet shoe, it was more blue a bit like this……

Satin

But not quite

But it was almost exactly this pink….

Made with Repix (http://repix.it)

The beautiful Pink Rain by Illmasqua. it was irrelevant because she couldn’t  find a skirt in this colour, and worse still all the satin skirts were reeeaalllyy pleated, not a great idea if you have hips!

So, our heroine decided to take things in her own hands, she drew the outfit…..

image

And sewed it herself! oh wait a minute, she doesn’t really know how to sew…..but dear reader she is planning to learn, she has a brand new sewing machine (she lost the power cable for a month but hey ho) she has a mum who is PHENOMENAL at sewing and soon she starts sewing class! of course now our heroine is planning a whole range of clothes and Victoria Beckham style success…….but really she would be so happy if she could just have the perfect pink satin skirt.

The Best Laid Plans!

My Sunday was all planned out….we were going to go to Brighton, shop the vintage clothes stores for a prom bag for my daughter and then to the large indoor market hoping to score some fab champagne glasses for the wedding of my mate Nikki, all the while taking photos for the blog.

We started at The Farm cafe in North Road, fabulous local food, not an additive or pesticide in sight, so far so delicious, here’s the remains of my eggs Benedict….

imageThen it all went to pieces, my darling daughter who has been working like a thing possessed on her GCSEs started to look decidedly green! we made it to Be Worn Again, snapped up a plain bag and then had to take her home. I might have felt a bit peeved but this kid is a diamond, focused, driven and with her eyes fixed on the prize of a career in medicine, So it was home we went……but now what to blog?

So, let’s have a State of the Union post, a how we doing and whats cooking post. First up, how is the pet portrait painting going?

I have just recently completed this picture for a gentleman who won it as a raffle prize…..

image

I have two more pictures to complete this month, so these will be taking up most of my time.

Next, its bears, I have been working with a company called Maximus who support disabled people back into work, my advisor is called Julia and she is brilliant, she is supportive and a great shoulder to cry on when the medical issues get a bit much. I made this bear a while ago and we named it Maxine in honour of Maximus…

image

Just recently, Julia asked me to write a piece for Maximus’ in house magazine, this has now led to me being featured at their conference so I feel that Julia also needs to be honoured in bear form and as she is so glam I have settled on this gorgeous fur…

image

I will also be looking to get a stall at our local craft market, to sell some of the bits and pieces I have been making, I am going to try to book for August so that afore-mentioned super daughter can help me……

image

What does that leave for me to do in my spare time? for the last few weeks I have been working on this shawl from Mollie Makes……

image

I am in the home stretch now and just have some leaves to complete, oh and all the sewing up to do!

Finally, I bought this fabric from the Vintage Cottage……

image

it is destined to be a backpack, I am trying to hone my skills with a view to designing some bags, I have a colossal bag collection but the arthritis in my arms is rendering them a little useless, so I would like to make some fabric bags that look as desirable as some of my proper bags.

What sort of bag would light your fire?
