Tricky Trends And How To Tame Them!

Morning my little cupcakes! its been a proper terrifying week at WDS HQ! Mr Darcey Sleeps has had a mystery virus that landed him in Accident and Emergency, one bag of IV fluids and antibiotics and he is beginning to look a bit better. So, lets get on with these trends:

Ruffles and volume in general is a key trend and brands are sticking ruffles on anything that doesn’t move! for me, who is more than a little on the large and short side, this is not an easy trend but it is still doable….

Made with Repix (http://repix.it)

these skaters ( I bought both colours!)from http://www.simplybe.co.uk nail the ruffle trend and are super comfortable too.

I also bought this…..

Made with Repix (http://repix.it)

which is also from Simply Be, the ruffles are cleverly placed on this drawing the eye down rather than across.

Orange eyeshadow whoa nelly! do they really expect us to do this? But fear not loves its actually surprisingly wearable……..

This is courtesy of the gorgeous daughter (as I still have a boil on my eye) this shadow is from a palette called 35s by Morphe,  its strength is the subtle shimmer and the fact that it is more tangerine than orange. The daughter used a yellow wash up to the eyebrow, orange on lid and under the eye. She took the reddish orange from the palette, and took it under the eye and the outer part of the lid in a v shape. Black eyeliner and mascara finish the look , if you are convinced get yours at http://www.beautybay.co.uk.

Finally, and this is a real disaster for me…

Yellow!!!! yellow is a no no if you are my colouring, I am blonde and pale skinned and can tend towards looking naked if I wear yellow! but wait there is always handbags …..

shopping

Look at this little poppet from Dune! More buttercup than daffodil, with a pretty scallop detail it goes by the delightful name of Dinidipley and is available from http://www.dune.co.uk and other retailers.

Before we part company, can I just say how profoundly glad I am that I live in the UK with an NHS which is struggling but still able to deliver world class care. I also want to make the point that in our hospital that care is being delivered by people from every corner of this world. I have to vote in two elections over the coming months and I will be voting for the party that will support those people in saying in the UK.

See you next week for a whats going on at WDS HQ post

Kisses

Do Believe The Hype!!

Good morning Darcey’s Angels! I was supposed to help you through the tricky trends that are flying about at the moment but I really need to tell you about my new favourite company! I kept hearing about this new beauty brand, as my favourite drag queen Jinkx Monsoon said….

jinkx-monsoon-little-edie-360x387

“it was in all the Magazines”

So if you are make up obsessed and you like luxury brands but your income is more SuperDrug than Chanel, Allons-y!

The company is called Beauty Pie and its the brainchild of Marcia Kilgore who started brands like Soap and Glory and Bliss. The idea is you purchase membership to Beauty Pie (mine costs £10 a month) and then the products are available to you at the bare bones price – no fancy packaging, no making the containers heavy just because that feels like “quality” and no middle men. That bare bones price is RIDICULOUSLY cheap, come and have a look……..

My first purchase was some foundation…….

This is an amazing product and I would show you what it looks like on but I have a boil on my eye!! I know TMI!  back to the foundation , its a fluid but medium coverage product, it does not budge and it doesn’t upset my skin! how much I hear you ask? £5.06!!! reviewers on the site are comparing it to Chanel and Dior!

Next a lippie…………..

This is Heartthrob Pink Future Lipstick in Matte, it is gorgeous lightweight, silky  and not at all drying as some mattes are. It also leaves a stain on the lip for most of the day, and this jewel is….£2.24!!

Finally ( for the moment) is this mascara……

This is the Radical Lash Super Volumizing and its £1.99! because of the whole boil/eye scenario its being modelled by my daughter and as you can see its fantastic! instant volume and no clumps!

Finally, Beauty Pie are bringing out new products daily and I have just ordered some moisturiser, i’ll let you know how it performs.

Ps no bluebells were harmed in the making of this blog ,these are from my garden!

Have a lovely week

From Titans To Trash – I Love Them All!

Morning kitty cats! I expect that very soon there will be thousands of english lit. students cramming facts on this years set books. To me this force feeding of literature is the opposite of what reading should be. We should meander through books, changing subjects according to mood and how much attention we can give to reading in that moment.

Let me illustrate with a wander of the titles on my Kindle:

First and definitely in the titan category………..

cvr9781476733425_9781476733425_hr

This is a stunningly written, decadent tale of a couple whose fragile marriage is kept afloat by their reckless spending. Rich with the kind of detail that creates the most wonderful images in your head, I can’t wait for it to be turned into a Baz Luhrmann film like the Great Gatsby ( and if you haven’t seen it you are excused to go and watch it).

Next a really modern tale that will make you look at your iPhone differently………

225x225bb This is a subtle, threatening book about a girl that lands her dream job with a tech company that has designs on managing every aspect of your life and I mean every aspect…. Soon to be released as a film with Emma Watson watch out for the shock ending.

I also occasionally feel the need to understand an issue better, this is why I downloaded this…

Radical, by Maajid Nawaz, this is a true story, brutally honest account of how an ordinary english boy joined a radical islamist group. He also details how he came out the other side, in these troubled times I felt like I needed to understand the process of radicalisation better and this book really does give you an insight.

Sometimes great literature can be as easy to read as a gossip column……

7852517

L’assommoir by Emile Zola is just such a book, based around the cheap liqour bars that bear this name (it means to stun or knock out in french). The heroine Gervaise struggles her way out of poverty to open a laundry shop, only to see all her efforts gradually wasted by her alcoholic husband. The characters are so vivid you quickly become Team Gervaise and try and will her to succeed.

Finally, a book that I haven’t finished…….

HighRise(1stEd)

High rise by JG Balllard, I downloaded this as I saw a trailer for the film but couldn’t stay up to watch it. So far it has been fascinating, set in a luxury tower block, it chronicles the residents descent into anarchy. I am half way through and can’t imagine how it will end!

And just in case you think I only read serious books I have a number of these…

225x225bb-2

Fun and full of desciptions of amazing shopping trips, they are made for me!

I am taking next week off as I have a big craft fair to prepare for, I’m attending the Paper Daisy Events Easter Boutique Market at the Bright helm Centre In Brighton. Please pop along and say hello if you are local.

I will return the week after with Tricky Trends and How To Wear Them!
