#NoFilter!

Morning! As we approach the second birthday of this blog, I was thinking about when I started taking photos to put on here. It had been my intention to take “proper photos” on a “proper camera”, but that never happened. The majority of my photos are taken on my iPad mini or on my iPhone. The process doesn’t stop there though, almost without exception they will be run through a photo editing app called Repix, turning up the light, intensifying the colour.

Curiosity got the better of me at this point, what would my photos look like stripped bare of any editing and with the most basic of cameras?

First I grabbed this………

My daughters Instax, like the old Polaroid it produces the picture in seconds and is super simple to use…….or was it…..

Here’s number 1……

My blue berry bush, really over exposed but strangely pretty.

And then………..

My tiny Buddha in the garden looking as massive as an Easter Island statue and just as imposing.

Next……..

Mad Mr Milo the poodle looking like a faceless monster.

How about a product picture………..

This I liked, whilst it didn’t capture the level of detail I like, it’s moody, soft focus looks a bit fashion magazine to me.

And finally….

A really odd picture of a rose!

I really enjoyed this lack of perfection and I think it introduces a mood to the pictures that wasn’t there before, I won’t be changing my usual methods for the majority of the time, I will be using this camera when it suits the subject matter.

What camera do you use? I’d love to see some pictures! Share with me on Instagram and Facebook

Getting There In A Roundabout Way!

Good Morning Darceys Angels! there is a saying that man makes plans and God laughs, I had a plan to put a video of me painting on here, but it turned out a bit ….meh….and then I got involved with something that diverted my attention for a bit (more of that later) and…anyhoo this is how the week went.

As you know I’ve been designing  Christmas cards, first I did our CEO Darcey…..

And then to avoid a row our VP Milo had to have one……..

img_4468

This ones called Surprise!

Finally, as we are an all inclusive company I thought we had best do a cat design, however our own cat Jasper is a 17 and half bag of bones bless him, so I searched for a stock photo (that means copyright free) and chose this one…….

img_4473

as you can see I was so lazy I just screen shot it! I wanted to add some Christmas to it so I replaced her paw with a bauble. Now I expect proper artists have a method to where they paint first but you know thats not my style! look what I did first………..

img_4501

Yep! I did the bauble first, what can I tell you I love a bit of sparkle!

After some concentration it ended up like this………..

img_4511

I put more of a smile on her and a bit of tinsel around her ear. This ones called Dreaming Of Christmas.

It was at this point that I got distracted in the most useful way, through the magic of Facebook I was made aware of a lovely local boy called Sumner Malik, Sumner is suffering from a brain tumour called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma. This is a diagnosis that brings a life expectancy usually counted in months rather than years. Sumner’s family and friends are doing everything they can to raise some money for some treatment that will prolong his life.

Sumner’s story hit me straight in the heart, I have given a portrait voucher to the auction of promises that is being held, and after a bit of a think I have decided to donate 20% of the sales of these Christmas cards to Sumner’s appeal. As soon as they are printed I will let you know and hopefully Darcey’s Angels can show Sumner some love.

In the meantime if you feel generous Sumner has a page on http://www.Justgiving.com/crowdfunding/sunshine4sumner.

Have a super week

A Birthday Trip To The Mother ship!

Hello darlings! did you miss me? it felt seriously weird not to talk to you last week, butI was (cue the music) Partying like its my birthday!

As you probably know I reside in the lovely county of Sussex, which is great but I am definitely a Londoner still in my heart, so at the slightest excuse we escape back to the “smoke”.

On this birthday themed mission I had three goals:  go to Selfridges and buy some Ellis Faas make up, go to Liberty and visit their haberdashery and end up at the restaurant Dirty Bones. Here is what went down……..

img_0197

You know something good is going to happen when you see these doors (thanks to my American friends for sending us Mr Selfridge) but this time the main event were the Shakespeare themed windows, have a look at these…..

I love this quote and this shop is certainly full of devilish temptation!

After walking round cooing and aahing at the lovely stuff on offer I bought a milk chocolate mascara, a lovely medium brown eyeshadow and a super red lipstick for the winter ( yes I’m having another go at red lips!) here they are……..

Purchases made it was off to Liberty, now if you are not familiar with it, this is a London institution built in the 1890s and then majorly renovated in 1924 using the timber from two ships (yes, ships!) the HMS Impregnable and the HMS Hindustan, have a look what they did with all that wood……….

Aint it something! sadly haberdashery was a little disappointing, it used to be much more eclectic and was a little Rowan dominated for me, but hey ho, a tea cake in there cafe sorted me out!

Where do you go if you have just eaten a tea cake? to dinner of course! Off to a new one for us in this lovely hideaway called Kingly court……..

img_0213

Apologies for the light but this was one of those particularly grey London days!

Dirty Bones is on the second floor…….

img_0211

Look how quick I can move when there is a burger at the end of it!! Dirty Bones turned out to be a runaway hit, my burger came with black treacle bacon and Gorgonzola cheese and was placed on the coolest table ever !!……

img_0214

Yup, it was a pinball machine!

I didn’t take any food pictures, it always feels a bit intrusive and unless you catch it straight away don’t bother! no one wants to see half eaten food!

Sadly it was then time to go home, pain, impending bankruptcy and worry about the parents dealing with their furry grandkids had caught up with us but not before we caught one last picture…………

img_0217

Yes its Stella McCartney, which always makes me think of the Absolutely Fabulous episode where Edina stands outside and screams “Stella!” give it  a look on YouTube! we all shouted but she didn’t come out!

Next week there may be a little video for you -if I can wrap my head round the technicalities!!

Have a cracking week poppets

Every Pin You Pin, I’ll Be Watching You!……

Cue sinister good morning, mwah hah, hah! Seriously, do you use Pinterest? I love it, access to all the pretty things in the world at the touch of a button, what not to like? But for me it has a more serious purpose because I analyse what people are pinning of mine and therefore gain an insight into what kinds of things  I should concentrate my design efforts on. Let me demonstrate by showing you my top performing pins.

Number 1 by a long chalk is …….

A very simple design but beautifully executed.

Then we have ……..

Everything Alice in Wonderland does really well to be fair but this outperforms the lot, I think the cuteness ( we will come back to that!) and the pastel colour scheme make it extra special.

Coming in third is this……..

A Blythe doll, I love them and the colour scheme of this photo really appealed to me… And lots of others!

That minty colour comes back in the next pin….

This is a great aspirational image, we want our tables to look like this, we want that crockery and dear lord we want that cake!!!!

The next image is exquisite……

I pin a lot of fairy images ( shocker! ) but this extraordinary doll in its breathtaking surroundings is a hands down winner.

Sometimes a pin is as much about the skill of the photographer as the subject….

The flowers are beautiful but the choice of light background and the exposure used elevate a Ho hum picture to a Wow!

Let’s not forget the huge number of tutorials available……..

I love super talented artists that are generous enough to share a how to with me!

Lastly……..

There is nothing cuter than a deer in a jar!

So, what does this tell us? The person who pins from my boards loves cute, with a bit of an edge and is likely a creative person themselves.

I am unashamedly using this info for some super cute Christmas cards and decorations!

Happy pinning!

Kisses

Karen

Ps  there will be no blog next week as its my birthday and we are off to London, the following week will be all about what we got up to and what I bought! See you then xx
