I’m Being Perfectly Unoriginal!

Good Morning my darlings! Do you remember the backpack that I have  been inching towards completion? It was very influenced by the lovely Dolce and Gabbana Miss Sicily bag……img_3866

Well it seems like I’m not the only one that thought it was lovely, here is a Fendi bag and one from Simply Be………

It took me a long time to realise that designers don’t walk around with their brains stuffed with completely original ideas, that all design is influenced by what has come before, so without further ado, here is the finished backpack…….

Well…not exactly, because I was so pleased with how it was shaping up I searched for actual proper straps, d rings and a way to attach the d rings….

Can you spot the missing component? yup no d rings they are winging their way to me! and I have decided on some icord rather then ribbon that gathered the original…..

I have got another bag on the go ( I decided that I need to practice bag making before starting on my own designs ) I will share it with you soon but next weeks post will be all about my trip to the valley of the nerds-i’m off to Comic Con!

In the meantime who wants a link?

The yarn is Billie Jean from http://www.woolandthegang.com

The straps and D rings came from http://www.u-handbag.com

The flowers are from my stash of felt and other fabrics but great stuff is available at http://www.feltedfanciessupplies.co.uk and http://www.sewsweet.co.uk

A Tale Of Two ‘Poos, Paint And Too Many Cables!

* As I finished editing this post the shooting started in Germany, I have written posts sympathising with various countries whose citizens have been brutally murdered, I have posted Je Suis Parisienne and everyone that followed. I’m not going to post about these events anymore, it’s not because I don’t care, it’s because my heart is breaking because it doesn’t make any difference. I want you to know that I love you, whatever your nationality and wherever you live, and that I cry with you when these events happen. This blog will be where we escape, where we laugh and gaze at pretty things, but most of all a place of love.*

Good morning to you fair reader! well what a week at WDS HQ! We have been decorating our tired and faded lounge. As you can imagine when I decorate I can spend 6 hours choosing a the right shade of beige! To try and shorten the process I downloaded an amazing app by the paint makers Valspar. This app allows you to take a picture of an item and it will choose a range of colours that match it! So I took a picture of the birds on this gorgeous cushion ( bought for me by my lovely sister in law) ………

After running the two birds through the app, I got these two colour palettes……

I eventually chose a slighter bluer of the above palette and the top right colour of the faded in time palette, both colours were Dulux rather than Valspar.

Work commenced with a tidy up of the cables that were behind the TV unit, worryingly there were this many with no purpose……

The dogs helped, Milo thought if he got on a ladder he might be tall enough to paint…..

Darcey didn’t let the position of her bed put her off…..

We painted and sanded and glossed, and finally I could hang these pictures that hubby and daughter scored from the charity shop……

The warm apricot white also makes a lovely backdrop for this Alexander McQueen sketch……..

Can you see the whole room? Not yet, the curtains need changing as well as a new rug etc and with my ability to agonise over the correct shades that might take a while! And what appeared in my Facebook feed the day after we started painting? This “must have” palette for summer from Elle Decor………

Hey ho, seems I’m not so original!

Please take care of yourselves, you mean so much to me xxxx

Shiney, Happy Photos!

Uggghhh! No sooner had flow arrived..it went! Shoulder arthritis, multiple sprains and a migraine packed it’s bags for it. I have managed to draw out a new type of portrait…….

Eventually it will be Darcey with a floral crown, I also have fairy puppies floating round my head. However one pencil drawing does not a blog post make, so I was thinking about all the pictures I take and delete, and what makes me keep some of them for so long, here is my top 10 that didn’t get deleted.

Number 1…..

The combined loveliness of my Darcey and my husband Neil.

Number 2……

Me at the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Victoria and Albert museum, so good I saw it twice and cried twice at the loss of a genius.

Number 3….

The picture that made me buy a hysterical, self opinionated and completely precious toy poodle called Milo.

Number 4…

My first piece of business post, I was disproportionately excited.

Number 5…..

Your colours for AW 2016, for those old enough to remember do they remind you of the seventies?

Number 6…..

Because however hard I try, I just can’t seem to grow up!

Number 7…….

I took this picture to illustrate this years colour of the year but I’ve kept it because it is the most perfect colour.

Number 8…..

To me these are actual Angels, these are people that with the help of a local theatre group screened the families of the victims of the Orlando shooting from the evil that is the Westboro baptist church, who picket the funerals of LGBT people ( amongst others) this is humanity at it absolute best.

Number 9……..

Bluebell s- I admit I am obsessed but they sum up British woodland in a picture.

Number 10……

I usually ignore the endless motivational memes that pop up on Facebook but I love this one and I try to be supernova like as often as possible.

So have you got a photo on your phone or tablet that you will never delete? I’d love to see it!

Going With The Flow!

Morning kitty cats! do you know what flow is? flow is where whatever you are doing becomes effortless, where you sail through you day achieving greatness left, right and centre. I have definitely had a couple of days of flow this week, one particular painting was giving me grief so I turned my attention to other things, heres what happened….

I designed, drew a pattern and cut out a little felt girl, no prizes for guessing what flower she is based on!

I cut out these espadrilles, from this gorgeous fabric…

img_4033

The flow got a bit carried away at this point and cut out without leaving a seam allowance! back to the cutting board.

Then I cut out a purse from this fabric…..

img_4028

You know I’m addicted to the macaron theme! its also practice for the bag line I want to design, its a fact that my design skills are way above my actual making skills so I need to get making.

I crocheted like a demon, to finish my Dolce inspired backpack …….

Made with Repix (http://repix.it)

And promptly ran out of yarn! and this Wool and the Gang recycled denim is so popular (and rightly so) its a 3-4 week wait before its back in stock, aaarrgghh!

I am hoping that the flow is strong next week and I can finish some of these and get back to painting.

I also managed  to write my first post for http://www.MyTrendingStories.com, I will be aiming to post for them on a wednesday (which will be a repeat of what appears here) and also on Sunday which will be new content that won’t appear here, so if you need more of me you need to pop over to them and look in the lifestyle section!

May the flow be with you!

We Are All (Alice) Mad Here!

Hello my darlings, I have a confession to make, I have never read Alice in Wonderland! I know, shocking stuff! I quite liked the Disney version as a child but I didn’t become a true fan until the Tim Burton film.

Now my life is full of Alice bits and bobs, I started with this book……

It is stuffed to the brim with achievable makes, these Cheshire cat sandwich toppers take an Alice themed party to a truly stripey level………

Of course when I turned 50, a couple of years ago (ouch!) I had a themed party, the centre piece of which was this sleepy dormouse teapot cosy…….

There are a number of patterns available on Ravelry, if you are not a member, go now and join its an incredible resource for the knitting or crochet fan.

Dormice led to flamingos….

How bonkers is that print? this bag hangs in my dining room which is slowly turning into an Alice palace!

Now of course we have a second film Alice Through The Looking Glass, this has brought another lot of products onto the market, on one of my trips to the comic store (yes, my husbands conversion of me into a  comic nerd continues) I bought this……..

I know! a paper doll book! its about 45 years since I last did one of these, I am debating what to do with these..they might form a picture with the background painted by yours truly, they might get stuck on furniture or even hung from somewhere, I will keep you posted.

While we are on the subject of comics, look what I got for Mothers Day……

This is a fascinating book that details how Alice has lived through the medium over 70 plus years!

Finally, I have not really been a fan of the whole colouring craze (strange for an artist who colours for a living!) I had a false start with a Liberty print book which was waaaayyyy too fiddly, but I leapt at this Alice themed one, part of a large selection on Amazon……

So I have decided that the dining room will now be fully bonkers and have purchased some flamingo print wallpaper! I will let you see it when the whole room is finished.

In the meantime off you pop and paint some roses!

Kisses
