Creative Family established 1890

Hello loves, it’s fair to say the last 10 years or so have seen an explosion of craft and traditional hobbies, and we love it, we are glued to the bake off and to anything that Kirstie Allsop produces as we try and recapture some of the traditions of the past.

I am sure that there are thousands of families that are quietly handing down traditions of their own, without the benefit of a television crew, this is what happened in my family’s crafting history. First up my great grandmother, Harriet Louisa Scoffins……
image

image

Harriet’s talent was cooking, making jam and lemon cheese ( a sinfully indulgent version of lemon curd) selling them in Lincoln market. Incredibly she would also make a Christmas pudding for each of her children and married grandchildren, that was approximately 35!

One of her 11 was my grandmother Barbera, she was a demon with the knitting and sewing needles, here she is in an outfit she made for herself, with my mum and uncle Mick also in handcrafted outfits……

image

And a slightly spooky Santa picture where mum wears hand knitted gloves and check out uncle Micks guards jumper again all her own work!

image

Now to the formidable talent that is my mum, every grandchild and every friends baby that has come along receives one of these shawls, intricate isn’t really enough of a description……

image

Then there are the quilts, one Christmas each of her three children received a quilt….

image

Finally, when my mum and dad used to have my daughter for two days a week, she used to set mum little challenges, this is the day when she decided she needed a dress like Disneys Belle complete with basket!…

image

Now did all that get passed on to me? Yes and no, I didn’t start knitting until I got medically retired, and I still cannot knit shawls to save my life, I cannot do colour work like my grandmother and we best not discuss my preserve making skills! but I did pick up that need to create and took it in different directions…

image

So, it really doesn’t matter whether your talent is textiles or tiling, wallpapering or weaving you do have a skill you can pass on. No kids to pass it on to? No excuse, get along to a youth club, or volunteer at your nearest school or nursery, let’s ensure that

these skills keep going, with or without Ms Allsop!

Stop Mucking About!!!!

Hello loves, did you know that I used to be a civil servant? Not only that I was pretty good project manager, I had lists flow charts, Filofaxes, spread sheets and project timelines. That’s nice I hear you say, but why are we talking about this? I’m talking about it because I have become so disorganised!!! Pain, medication and the mental effects of fibromyalgia have robbed me of all my skills.  Couple that with an imagination that races around at a 100mph, and this is what you get……

image

So what is the solution? Before is started this blog I took a blog writing course at Www.creativelive.com, it was taught by a fantastic woman called April Bowles Olin, well April writes a fantastic blog as does her best friend Mayi Carles, and Mayi is the queen of organisation! she is running a project called Life is Messy to support this she has a wonderful package of downloads, that organise every aspect of your working and personal life, I have just downloaded it, are you ready for a sneeky peek?….

image

Throughout the package there are Mayis illustrations.

There are planners for the year, month and daily…. .

image

There re are ways to establish your unique talents…..

image

There are also planners for your personal life, like meal planners and emergency contact lists…..

imageimage

There so many pages, I haven’t posted them all as this post would be a mile long!

This planner will now enable me to have a weekly planning session, and gives me somewhere to right down all my ideas.

I will also be heading over to April’s blog – http://www.blacksburgbelle.com, and reading through her guidelines for new creative businesses ( find it on the site in the New? Start here section) , here’s the articles that are jumping out to me……..

The top 25 + tools to run your business

Landing pages, what they are And why you should use them

Your get healthy reading list.

So it’s time for me to get organised and also to start being professional, because what started as a distraction has actually turned into a proper business!

Please share any organising or business tips,  I’m always grateful for any suggestions!

This Week I Have Mainly Been………

Good morning dear reader, I am afraid that this week has been a bit of a washout for me, I have pleurisy! This is making the simple act of breathing demanding enough. So this weeks post is a bit sucky.. It has crap photos taken on my lap and a picture of antibiotics……..

image

Apart from taking those bad boys I have been painting the lovely Isis……

image

I have been slowly making festive tattoo hearts………

image

I have made a start on this lovely blanket that my mum and dad got me for my birthday……

image image

it cam from the marvellously named spitspotloves.com, they have all manner of vaguely Cath Kinston inspired goodies.

And when the wool arrives I’m going to make a few of these Liebkuchen from Mollie Makes, Liebkuchen are spiced biscuits from Germany and as my husband is half German I love to make things that refer to his heritage.

image

Finally, when the coughing has got too much, I have just gazed upon the loveliness that is the Laduree key ring that Neil got me for my birthday……..

image

Can you see it has a poodle on it? Milo is very impressed! there are all sorts of prettiness at laduree.com.

Lets all keep everything crossed and by next week I should be better and more blog capable!

How To Be Berry Sparkly!

Isnt it great when a trend you like stays around for longer than 5 minutes? I’ve made no secret of my love of all thing sparkly and thank goodness the embellished trend is still with us! Couple that with the colours of the season, the lovely berry and burgundy tones, we are onto a winner!

image

So, this combination inspired me to do another up cycling project, I have this pastel green short sleeved sweatshirt that is a great shape and good for these artic in the morning sweltering by lunchtime days! Perfect for a bit of an up Cycle! First it needed dyeing to a berry shade, I love Dylon dyes as they are so easy….

image

This shade is called Burlesque Red ?!? Not sure what makes it burlesque but it is definitely a burgundy/ berry shade. Follow the instructions and bingo a more winter appropriate shade!

Next it needs a spot of embellishment, I had some lovely grey crystals salvaged from a shirt that my daughter threw out and a few lilac ones from I don’t know where! Play around with them until you get a look you like, I tried these first……..

imageimage

But finally settled on this one………

image

Sew your embellishments in place and there you go….

image

A much more glam sweat in a great colour for the winter!

Have a great week,

Red Hot and Fuschia?

I am tired, not just today but always, I suffer from three different conditions that all have fatigue as a symptom, add in medication side effects, exhausted is a polite way to describe me! After reading lots of articles telling me that a red lipstick was the way to lift a tired complexion I convinced myself that the one thing I needed more than anything was a kick ass red lipstick!

Oh, dear reader how simple life would be if you could bowl into a shop and just buy a red lipstick! But it isn’t, it’s a 24 carat nightmare! Here is my painful story……

I started with what I thought would be a foolproof buy, Charlotte Tilbury in Love Bite…..

image

Wow it was red! And totally overwhelmed my face, it was the tomato red that an  online test ( yes really) assured me was the one but no that wasn’t it, undeterred I then bought three mini lipsticks from Charlotte Tilbury  that included the suits all red ” So Marilyn”……….

image

A beautiful colour but again just way too much.

Off to the high street this time and the Loreal Collection Exclusive “Blakes red” …………..

image

Imagine my horror that this didn’t look red, but more pink, hang on though, this actually looked better.

So, it looks like red wasn’t me but Fuschia definitely was, dear reader I give you Charlotte Tilbury’s Velvet Underground…….image

Hooray!! Face lifting, brightening and not too in your face. This one came courtesy of an early birthday present from my mum and dad but should you want your own head to http://www.charlottetilbury.com.

All the pictures are unfiltered to hopefully show you the true colour.

Next week is my birthday and I am celebrating with  another up cycling project hopefully!

kisses
