The One In Which It Was Really Cold!

Good morning cupcakes! well winter has well and truly come to my little corner of Sussex! we have had actual snow – which is a big deal for the south of England, look at my silly poodle pretending to be Scott of the Antarctic…..

Fortunately snow doesn’t stop work as I only have to commute to my armchair 🙂 I painted this commission ……….

It really was such a great exercise as I haven’t done monochrome for ages, I had to buy a lot more shades of black and grey (yes there are different ones!) and found out that Chinese Ink is a lovely warm black which makes for great depth.

I crocheted a herd of these bunnies with their creme egg backpacks…..

These two thought it was a bit too cold to hop to their new homes!

I have lots to make for this great event………

But I am not helping myself by being distracted by things like this……..

This past fashion week Gucci sent their models down the runway with these dragons, it really got me thinking about some pet dragons I could make – maybe pastel, maybe linked to your birthstone? I am going to try and resist the temptation to make some until after my fair.

I had made this Easter Bunny girl for my fair…..

But one of my amazing customers snapped it up! along with this mermaid…..

I have found the only way to keep myself organised with my work schedule is to plan and plan again! and the only way you can keep me interested in planning is if I have amazing stationery! so in the picture you can see my unicorn latte bookmark from my mate Shell at, beautiful stickers from What The Fox Designs (you can find her on and peeking out is my lovely planner from

So enough of this chit chat kittens, you need to go to bed or work or school or whatever awesomeness you are doing and  I had best crack on and make some stuff!

The One In Which I Was Nearly Late…..

Good afternoon my darlings! So there I was reading my good friend Shell’s blog post when I realised I should have done one!! So here is what is happening at WDS HQ this month!

While we are on the subject of Shell, she ordered two mermaids from before Christmas, I was true to my New Years resolution and used the opportunity to design my own……….

and this is Shell! she also ordered one for a friends daughter….

Not sure if this one has a name but I do know that making these knotted wigs for them has been my favourite thing! I wish you still had to put your profession on your passport- because I would have mermaid wig maker!

I also redid my bunny pattern and used this amazing yarn which self patterning flowers …

he also has a little backpack which you can fit a creme egg in! These have proved so popular that I cannot work quick enough to get any in the shop!

With the next make I went back to my beginning and made a bear, a bear that wants to play at unicorns…….

This is Blossom and I will be putting her in my shop tomorrow, she is the softest bear with the sparkliest eyes! I hope she finds a special someone 🙂

I also got a commission for a portrait of some gorgeous dogs, can’t post a picture until its gifted but its a great commission as its in black and white- something I haven’t done in forever!

Finally, I am so excited to have a stall at the Paper Daisy Easter Boutique Market on the 31st March. I think i might have to grow more hands to keep up with orders and make some stock! If you are local to Sussex in the UK we will be at the Shoreham Centre all day 🙂

Right enough chatting to you lot, its back to Easter bunnies for me!

Happy New Year!

Hello my loves! hows everybody head? I’ll try and keep it quiet 🙂 Here we are with a whole New Year, a slate wiped clean, 365 days of potential, 52 weeks to get all manner of things done……

or not.

We all know how easy it is to let life interfere with…well life, the one we want, the thinner, fitter, trendier, more successful life that we all dream of.

So Mrs know it all ( I hear you say) what can we do? I can only share one pearl of wisdom with you- plan, plan and plan again! get yourself a really lovely planner or notebook, there’s this one………

This pink Kikki K one is my hub for all things business related, I put my work schedule – what I am making on a week to week basis in there, I also jot down patterns and ideas and list materials, knowledge and tools that I need to get to make those ideas happen.

And this one………

This Daily Greatness journal is arguably the most powerful, its the one that makes you list things you are grateful for or the mindset that I want to channel for the day, it effortlessly lets you focus on being open to new things. It also allows you to set goals weekly, quarterly and for the year. Its expensive so I bought mine on Ebay!, here is

If you need any help with a positive mindset, why not channel this oldie but goldie from Nadiya Hussain from the Great British Bake Off…….

Does all this positive thinking and endless planning work? yes it does, but it’s not all pretty planners and positive thoughts. It’s sometimes about just keeping going, keep picking yourself up, keep trying to eat better, exercise more and make that business idea a reality. It’s perseverance and slog that gets the job done.

I shall be slogging away with you, even though last year was the most successful I have had, I shall be striving for more.

The materials I use will be upgraded……

There will definitely be more sparkle!

Every single item will be of my own design……

and each design will be refined, this bunny will be getting a backpack, big enough to hold some Easter chocolate!

I will start the process to ensure that all my makes can carry the child safety mark…..fullsizeoutput_4d4

This unicorn will be one of those both redesigned and tested for safety.

On a less serious note I will keep dreaming………

Because mostly every plan starts with a dream!

All that is left is to wish each and every one of you a 2018 full of love, health and happiness.

Ps if you want to keep up to date on the daily goings on at While Darcey Sleeps HQ pop over to, there is also a handy shop now button that takes you through to my shop ( you can also commission a portrait through it!)

That Was The Year That Was!

Hello my little cupcakes! How ya doing? it occurred to me that this is the last post for this year ( I’m a bit slow on the uptake) so lets have a look at what happened…….

It wasn’t a great year health wise! finally, after 12 years I have a correct diagnosis for all my aches and pains, and by the beginning of next year I might have some effective treatment!

It was an AMAZING year for my teeny tiny company and it pretty much is all due to this…..

This unicorn ( a copyright free pattern from the now defunct Craftseller magazine) was ordered a total of 6 times! for me that constituted a viral hit!

I then had a sell out fair……..

Where I sold a bunch of bows and some things I had designed my self. This really gave me the confidence I needed to design for myself….

And this has meant that I have worked very single week since June and will be working up to Christmas Eve! Incredibly I was also asked to Kirstie Allsops Craft fair ( i couldn’t go as I had no stock!).

Whats in store for While Darcey Sleeps in the coming year? Im going to get child safety accreditation for my makes, I’m going to keep designing in the kawaii style (Japanese for cute), I’m going to sell patterns, kits and fabric felt and I’m going to plan to be ready for Kirstie this year!

This blog started in December 2013, a year to the day after my first panic attack, that original blog post had a picture of a bag that had summed up how I felt……

How appropriate that everything unicorn has made me have the most successful year!

The first person to follow my blog was Mrs P and she said “I can’t wait to see where that unicorn flies”, well Mrs P, that unicorn is getting turbo chargers!

Grab on everyone and lets see just how far this unicorn can fly!

Love you lots

Coming To A Blog Near You!!

Well good morning my little tiddly winks! have you missed me? I’ve missed you but I have been MAHOOSIVELY busy, I’ve been making these……..

Teeny little unicorns with lavender scented hair! and I’ve made one of these of these…..

Only one as it is so tiny! and more than a few of these……

Little baby Dino’s! and many of these…..

These teeny Frappucinos have been unicorn coloured, pumpkin lattes and festive for no apparent reason!

And now I have a herd of these to make!

All of these little things are so important to me, not only because I sold lots (a girl can’t live on unicorn toast alone) but they are all my own patterns.

So, I am relaunching the blog! it will be almost completely focused on craft, and the things I am making but there will be times I need to tell you about a fab new lipstick and times when something has happened that has me completely riled!! and just as soon as I get time to write patterns down there will be free patterns and ones to buy!

I also have a new shop, however the best place to keep up with new products and to nab them before they get to the shop, is to follow my page at

So, i’ll see you here on the first of every month, now off you go and be awesome!

The One In Which I Get Caught In A Stampede Of Unicorns!

Well good morning to you! I know, I’ve caught you at work, having a shower, changing the baby, making awesome things happen and all the wonderful things you do on a Monday but I really wanted to say hi and let you know whats been going on at WDS HQ.

I booked a fair at our local school for the 15th July, and a few weeks before I started making stuff to put on my stall, amongst a bunch of bows I made a unicorn from a pattern that was copyright free. I posted it on to my business Facebook page and it sold immediately and brought in two more orders! and now I have made so many I can’t count! I’ve made ones to cuddle……

I’ve made pink ones……

and i’ve made big ones…..

In between I’ve made a Wolpertinger (magical creatures that live in the Zauberwald in Germany), this is Beau, he is a butterpupcorn, and he flew off to his new home within seconds of listing him….

I did manage to get this mermaid to the fair……IMG_5668

This gorgeous picture was taken by her new owners mum.

On the day of the fair our stall was covered……

By the time we finished we had nothing that was unicorn themed, about 6 bows and one mask, a really great day for us.

So now I’m in the process of designing some magical Christmas decorations, I’m really pleased with this baby unicorn, who wanted to be an angel for Christmas………

I’m just waiting for some special yarns, some that are Christmas themed, some are scented! my life is more than a bit like this meme……..

I have also opened a new shop on a platform for people with disabilities, its a very supportive space and I might be listing here more than on Folksy. Check it out at

Thanks for listening and I will see you soon

Holy Hair Bow Batman! We Are Open!

Surprise!! its me! How are you? have you missed me? I have definitely missed youbut before  I bring you some exciting news I need to say a something about the series of horrendous events that have beset the UK over the last few weeks.

Firstly lets deal with the terrorists, and by that I mean the perpetrators of the Manchester arena attack, the Westminster attack, the London Bridge attack and the Finsbury Park mosque attack, the last attack being perpetrated by a white man who wanted to kill muslims. Why do I make that distinction? because terror is not owned by Jihadis – if you take actions to harm or kill someone based on your beliefs you are a terrorist. You also will not succeed, humanity will prevail because 98% of us are amazing.

Finally the horror that is Grenfell Tower, I just can’t find a appropriate word to describe my anger at the way successive governments have failed the occupants of that coffin in the sky, research continues into its cause but what was clear is our hanging by a thread Prime Minister failed. She failed to go and speak to people, she failed to allow them to vent their anger and their sadness. Who went to the tower? our 91 year old Queen in searing heat and for over an hour- oh and Jeremy Corbyn, the local MP who Teresa May couldn’t even pick up the phone too.

Praise without measure goes to our firefighters, ambulance staff and police officers. Praise also for the community who pulled together regardless of faith, Sikh helping Muslim, Muslim helping Christian. You demonstrated why the terrorists won’t win, because we are always better together.

Now for the good new my Folksy shop is open!! Skip over to and take a peek! there is practically nothing in there at the moment but I am listing like a mad thing! Too tired to click the link here is whats in there at the moment….

and it will not be just bows, there will be dressing up masks, sleep masks, keyring and probably a lot of unicorn related stuff!!

I will let you crack on with your day now, behave your selves and I will see you soon.

Under Construction!

Boo! I’m baaacckkkk! that break didn’t last long did it?  because I am fundamentally a technological Twit I am going to turn this blog into my website, so this page will just have some details about me and what I do and I’ll be adding a page called Whats Going On! and that will have updates about what I’m working on, things that have caught my attention, things that I can’t live without, you know the drill. This page will be updated as and when, no fixed schedule so pop back often!

So, let me pop off and get busy and I’ll see you soon!

Big kisses

I Love You….

Morning Darceyettes, please excuse the tear stained computer because this is a hard post to write. Remember when I took on my friend Nikki’s New Years Resolution? She had decided that she would do all the same things but with 5-10% more effort. It made total sense to me and I fully implemented it from the get go. However, it turns out that I don’t necessarily have 10% to give.

Almost as soon as I made this decision, parts of me started to fail, necks have got more painful, hands are intermittently numb and everything hurts. I have gradually built up my little business and that’s where I have decided that I must concentrate my very limited time.

This blog has been better therapy than my fantastic therapist, it’s been a place where I have recieved the validation that I so desperately needed. It is down to you that I got enough confidence to start painting and ask people to pay me for it. It’s down to you that I made things, showed you makeup and reviewed restaurants.

Not everything that has happened here has been joyful, there has been one too many “Je Suis” and we have discussed equality for everyone.

So, what now? I am leaving this blog open and I’m sure I will pop back every now and again when I have something gorgeous to show you or something I need to talk about, I will also keep the gallery updated. I will be opening my Etsy shop next week and I am on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, so if you can’t live without my stream of consciousness please come and follow me.

So here we go, it’s goodbye to a weekly update and our precious time together, and I just want to say I love you, because I do, I really do.

A bientot my loves
